Long Run

Lera and I did the Runner's World Half Marathon in Bethlehem, PA Sunday. Great weather and fall colors. I'll say it again, I love this time of year. We checked out the "athletes village" on Saturday--lots of happy people dressed in bright colors purusing shiny new shoes and reflective clothing in the middle of an old rusty steel manufacturing campus. I faced off with Dean Karnazes (ultramarathonman) for cheesiest expression and then hit a local brewery for Irish coffee and pumpkin beer. Race morning was crisp and good. We started smooth and stayed within our pace, which made the 13.1 miles actually enjoyable. We annihilated several gu's at about mile 9 and pushed the last few miles to finish ahead of the goal we'd set. Lera smiled all the way till business time at the end where we sprinted the long final stretch. Didn't stay for any Mich Ultra (if they'd had Yuengling...) and made it home in a sort of exhausted haze. Our bodies are still sore, but it was worth it. Her first half, and she's planning for another. Phone pics follow. Cheers.

Moldova

Spent the past week in Chisanau (capital of Moldova--former soviet eastern european country) for work. Got a chance to run, although the streets and sidewalks are way too overcrowded to run during daylight hours. Not to mention nobody runs for exercise in this country. One of the Moldovan military guys I was working with explained it as, "I guess everyone is more worried about trying to make money to survive, no one is living comfortably enough to do things like jog in the park." Anyway, I did a few miles at 3:00 in the morning one night. This involved being threatened by some drunk local guys, getting chased by wild dogs, yelled at by a bum in a park, and being accosted by prostitutes. That Tough Mudder shit isn't adventure, go for a jog in a former soviet city. Some pics follow.

Independence monument (gained independence in 1991 like most soviet satellites)

Parliament building

Memorial park to the Great Patriotic War (WWII)

Streetside stand (they are everywhere and sell anything from paintings to pantyhose)

Very soviet looking building

European continental breakfast

The country is famous in the region for its wine (and it is pretty good)

Most wonderful time of the year
