Tinkering

Modification on the rigid for climbing Stitz, I presume.

Pretty much. The gravel road climb will be much better on the rigid. Also, the singletrack is very interuppted/non flowy. I think the lighter, smaller rigid will excel in these conditions. The race is short too so I can take a quick beating. I'm not big on riding that thing more than a couple hours at a time.
